In a classic display of 'shoot for the moon, even if you land amongst the energy drink cans' political manoeuvring, Real Madrid presidential hopeful Enrique Riquelme recently put his cards, or rather, his very ambitious wish list, firmly on the table.
His big pitch to win over the discerning Madridista faithful? A promise that should he sweep into power on Sunday, the tactical mastermind Jürgen Klopp would be instantly installed as the club's new head coach. A bold claim indeed, given Klopp's current commitments.
However, before anyone in Madrid could start printing 'Klopp for President... of Football' banners, the German's long-suffering agent, Marc Kosicke, stepped in to perform the football equivalent of a cold shower. He's reportedly shot down the 'annoying' talk, suggesting Riquelme might be getting a little ahead of himself.
Because, you see, Mr. Klopp isn't exactly twiddling his thumbs awaiting the call from the Bernabéu. He's currently rather busy as Red Bull's head of global football – a role that, while perhaps lacking the immediate glamour of the Real Madrid dugout, certainly seems to keep him occupied enough that a sudden U-turn for a presidential candidate's pipe dream isn't on the cards.
So, while the dream of 'Klopp at the Bernabéu' might have set a few pulses racing, it seems for now, the only 'Red Bull' he's interested in is the company that employs him. Back to the drawing board for Riquelme, then.
